GHANA : EC TO HOLD CRUCIAL IPAC MEETING OVER ‘MISSING ’ NAMES ON REGISTER

The Electoral Commission (EC) is expected to hold a crucial meeting with political parties later this morning, Thursday, September 24, 2020, on brewing tensions over alleged missing names from the provisional electoral roll.

The incident which is being recorded on a large scale from across the country has already incurred the wrath of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) whose flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, described it as a reflection of the Electoral Commission’s legendary incompetence.

Ashaiman, in the Greater Accra Region, has reported 7,000 missing names, South Dayi in the Volta Region reported close to 2,000 missing names, while Jirapa in the Upper West Region reported over 1,500 names.

The NDC sees this as a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise eligible voters in its strongholds and forewarns of chaos on election day if the situation is not immediately rectified.

The Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting today is thus expected to afford the stakeholders to forge a consensus on the thorny issue.
Mahama to speak on ‘missing’ voters’ register names today

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is expected to speak today, September 24, 2020, on the supposed missing names on the electoral roll.

A statement signed by the NDC’s Campaign Spokesperson, James Agyenim-Boateng indicated that the address will be delivered at the party’s headquarters in Accra.

“The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama will on Thursday speak to the nation from the NDC headquarters in Accra at 1 pm on the integrity challenges of the electoral process and unfolding events that threaten to undermine Ghana’s stability and democracy,” said the statement.

The NDC had alleged that the ongoing voters’ exhibition exercise has been fraught with electoral irregularities.

John Mahama and his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang both suspended their regional campaigns over the concerns with the register.

The former President said too many issues have characterized the voter registration and exhibition exercises due to the EC’s poor management.

Political parties, accredited civil society groups, donor partners and officials of the electoral Commission are expected to participate in this meeting.

He has since called on the international community to as a matter of urgency intervene in the electoral processes in Ghana.

He said they must take a keen interest in current happenings which he described as chaotic.
