TWO-TIME AFCON WINNER HERVÉ RENARD REVEALS FORMULA TO WINNING THE COMPETITION

Former Ivory Coast and Zambia coach Hervé Renard has revealed the formula for winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

The French man led Zambia and Ivory Coast to success in the 2012 and 2015 tournaments respectively, becoming one of the most successful coaches on the continent.

Currently the coach of Saudi Arabia, Renard- who was once a physical instructor of the Ghana national team, says discipline is the key to winning the nations cup.

"When you make the mistake of selecting a player because he is good and not disciplined, you will fail," he told Tv3. "So it is better to leave that player out and go for the one who contributes to good team spirit," he added.

Despite winning his success with the Elephants and the Chipolopolo, the 51-year old failed with North African giants Morocco.

Renard believes players must play to defend the flags of their countries if they want to win the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting Africans are football-mad people and put their all into the game.

"You have to play for the flag of the country," he said. "In Africa, life stops for football. So there is passion for that. So as a player or a coach you need to think about them.

"You need to play for them to make them proud as a country.

"It is difficult to get your hands off the AFCON trophy because everybody wants it. But, if the people get behind the team, which is an important thing to do, then it is possible."
