This is the third article I am writing about the English names of things we use everyday that we don't know about.Let me take you through some of the things we learnt in the last two articles. These are some of the things we learnt in the last two articles :
(1)"Alansa " - its English name is African star fruit
(2)"Abrofo nkate3" - its English name is tropical almond. It's also known as Indian-almond.
(3)"Asanka"-its English name is earthenware bowl.
In this new article, we are going to learn about other things we ponder to know their original English names. Some may already know their English names but not all of us.
Let start with the original English names of things :
(1)"Nkeresia" - its English name is dates.
These fruit is famous among Muslims as they use this sweet fruit to break their fast. Dates are fruits of palm trees. Dates are really good in boosting the brain ;they are good in balancing the blood sugar in the body etc.
(2)"Mpi" - it's is known in English as rheum.
When we get up from our beds in the morning, we usually see a white fluid that comes out of our eyes - that is called rheum.
This mucus protects the eye from dirt and harmful chemicals but it is sometimes a warning of changes in your health system. As we keep on blinking , the eye flushes out the secretion of rheum produced but in very low quantities so it's hard for one to spot it. When we sleep at night, the mucus secreted during the day build up to form this large whitish mucus in our eye.
(3)"Tapoli" - the English name for it is wooden grinder.
We use this in Ghana to grind foodstuffs like pepper, tomato, turkey berries(Beduru) and others in an earthenware bowl (Asanka).Though there is something called blender, most Ghanaians prefer to use the wooden grinder.
(4)Rain Catcher
Most of us call this water tank, but its original English name is rain catcher. It is a water tank that is used to collect and store water. When it raining, we place it under a bent rain gutter to collect the rain water.
